June Joy Schirmer, age 82, of Elroy, WI
June Joy Schirmer, age 82, of Elroy, WI died peacefully on Thursday September 8, 2016 at the Milestone Senior Living Center in Hillsboro, WI. June was the daughter of Willard and Lydia (Visgar) Stokes and was born on February 19, 1934 in Mauston, WI.
June grew up in the Elroy area and graduated from Elroy High School in 1952, she then went on to Juneau County Teachers College in New Lisbon. June was united in marriage to Ernest R. Schirmer on July 17, 1954 at the home of Willard and Lydia Stokes in Elroy. The two of them resided in Milwaukee for less than a year while Ernest started working for the railroad. In 1955 they moved back to Elroy when they purchased a farm and Ernest remained working for the railroad and June assisted him on the farm. June and Ernest remained on the farm for over 50 years. Also, they helped start and operate the roller rink near Oakdale with June running the snack bar from 1964 to 1982.
Due to health issues they both left the farm and went into assisted living facilities, and Ernest died in December of 2015. June went to Kindred Hearts in Richland Center, WI in 2008, and in 2009 she went to Milestone Senior Living in Hillsboro, WI. June enjoyed crocheting, baking, and was a past member of the Daughters of Eastern Star, and was an avid card player. She loved to travel with her husband Ernest.
June is survived by two children Kurt (Lisa) Schirmer of Elroy, WI, and Kelley Schirmer of Reedsburg, WI, by 5 grandchildren; George, Philip and John Schirmer, Anthony (Lea) Koch, and Blake Koch, and a great grandson Joseph Koch, and by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ernest, daughter Bonnie Schirmer, and grandson Roman Koch, her siblings; Willard Stokes Jr. Frank Stokes, Lloyd Stokes, and Carl Stokes.
Funeral services will be held at the Hare Funeral Home (217W. Pearl St.) in New Lisbon on Thursday September 15, 2016 at 11:00a.m. with Pastor Delbert Oatsvall presiding. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation at the Hare Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00p.m. until 7:00p.m. Burial will be in the New Lisbon City Cemetery.
