Silver Star Mobile Food Pantry hopes to help fill a need in Juneau County

by Karen Eggleston

Hollie Slater of Mill Haven Foods and Silver Star Health saw a need in the area for people to go to receive food with “no walls or questions” asked. After 10 years with the New Lisbon Food Pantry Slater knew that even with a monthly visit to a food pantry the needs of many were still not being met. Slater said, “I think we all need some help once in a while and I wanted to provide another resource for people in Juneau County. It is a good community bonding experience. We all come together for a common goal of helping our neighbors.”

Currently, the Silver Star Mobile Food Pantry is held quarterly to see how much of a need there is in Juneau County. Slater has been working with Second Harvest for over a year on how to get the mobile food pantry up and going. All residents of Juneau County are welcome. The food items will vary each time.

On June 14 the Silver Star Mobile Food Pantry was held for the second time at Silver Star Health in New Lisbon. One hundred and twenty-one households with three hundred and sixty members in those homes utilized the food pantry. Of those households, ninety-six were first time users. There was 9,253 pounds of food available for the participants. The first Mobile Food Pantry served over one hundred and fifty people. Even though the distribution site had been moved indoors, the number of people participating was down, possibly due to weather.

The next two dates for the Silver Star Food Pantry are September 13 from 3 to 6 p.m. and November 8 from 3 to 6 p.m. For your convenience, it is recommended you bring your own bags and/or boxes.

Volunteers are always welcome. If you would like to be a volunteer for the next Silver Star Mobile Food Pantry you can contact Hollie Slater at Hollie@millhavenfoods.com or Facebook.com/NewLisbonFoodPantry.
