Apple Dumpling Day in Elroy September 9
Elroy’s Apple Dumpling Day Fest, and the taste of delicious Apple Dumplings that many of you have been longing for since last year’s event, is again upon us. Apple Dumpling Day
continues to grow each year, and this year's festival is no exception. Apple Dumpling Day is put on by the Elroy Lions Club with help from numerous other area individuals and organizations.
This year’s event is Saturday, September 9, in Schultz Park at the southern edge of Elroy. Scheduled events include: a pancake breakfast, Lions runs, a bean bag toss tournament, craft and vendor booths, Rabbit Show, free inflatables for the kids, a free kids pedal pull, a boy scout silent auction, and new this year will be a mass casualty demonstration put on by the Elroy Fire Department and Elroy Ambulance Service.
For the public, the day begins with a pancake breakfast at the Lions Den Food Stand. The breakfast will run from 7:00 am until 9:45am. Everyone is invited to come down and begin
your day with some delicious hot pancakes (served with apple sauce) and sausages while you watch the hustle and bustle of
other planned activities getting up and going.
For many of the runners, the day begins long before 7:00 am. The longest run will be the full-marathon (the Big Apple Marathon). For those runners not quite ready to tackle a full 26 mile marathon there is the 13 mile ½ marathon (The Sliced Apple ½ marathon). The marathon begins at 7:00 am. The ½ marathon begins at 8:00 am with runners starting their race in Hustler after a bus ride from the park up to Hustler. The next run is a 5K run/walk. (Apple Dumpling Dash) This run/walk also begins at 8:00. We know there are many local walkers and/or joggers out there, so the Lions Club encourages all area citizens to get out for some good exercise and participate in this fun event - get your friends together and walk in groups. The final runs are the kids runs. These races will take place around 10:00 am. The young runners will never leave the park for their runs. There are prizes for all children who participate. Also, ALL race participants in all races receive a free Apple Dumpling! Information may be accessed at: www.appledumplingdayraces.com.
But the races are only a portion of the numerous activities going on at the park that day. The park should be bustling with activity all day long. Going on throughout the day, beginning at 9:00 am, will be inflatable bouncy activities for kids of all ages. ThunderShower Inflatables out of Boscobel will again be this year’s provider. These inflatables are brought to us in part thanks to generous donations from area organizations and businesses. Thanks to these generous donations, there will be no cost for the children, they will be absolutely free of charge all day.
Another children's activity for this year's Apple Dumpling Day Fest will be a Kids Pedal Pull. Kindschi Pedal Pulls of Loganville puts on a fantastic pedal pull for children that will also be free of charge. A few children pulling that day will be traveling to Elroy in an attempt to qualify for the state pull. However, local youth are also encouraged and invited to enter
the pull as well. Again, this is a free activity for the children. Registration for the pedal pull takes place beginning at 10:00 and the pedal pull will begin at 11:00 near the Lions Food Den.
While the kids are enjoying time at one of these activities adults will have time to check out the crafters and vendors who will have set up their goods at the park. We hope to have a variety of crafters and vendors there showing off and selling their products. At last count, we have over 25 vendors planning on setting up booths for the day. Also, if you are a crafter or vendor and would like to take part in our Apple Dumpling Day, event we invite you to come to the park on Saturday morning and join us. There will be no fee charged this year to set up a booth. However, Crafters and Vendors will need to contact Kaitlyn Ladwig at 608 963-4053 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The bean bag tournament will also be held behind the Lions Food Stand. It will also feature two person teams. Registration will take place just prior to the the tournament with only a $10 registration fee and a 100% payback. The tournament will begin at noon as well. Everybody has fun playing the bean bag toss game. It is a sport that nearly anyone of any age, with any level of athletic ability can participate in. Why not get your wife, girlfriend, husband, neighbor, friend, son,
daughter, cousin, co-worker, or whoever and come on down to join in the fun!
Up under the George Weber Pavilion will be a Rabbit Show. Registration for this show begins at 7:15. The show will begin at 8:00. Those in charge of the show hope to have numerous classes of rabbits to show as well as an educational area set up to learn more about these fascinating creatures. For information about this show contact Dawn Schwartz at (608) 547-2204.
Something new this year is a Mass Casualty Demonstration being planned by the Elroy Ambulance Service and the Elroy Fire Department. Since there will be mass casualties during this demonstration, the Fire Department and Ambulance Service will be assisted by a number of area ambulances. They are also being assisted by members of the Royall football team who will be the victims. There are also planned visits from a Med-Link helicopter and hopefully also a Med-Flight helicopter (if their schedules allow) which will land on the ball field. The helicopter(s) will spend about an hour at the park. Apple Dumpling Day visitors will be able to take a look inside
these flying ambulances. This demonstration is planned to begin at 1:30, with the helicopter(s) landing somewhere around 2:00 pm. You are not going to want to miss this incredible
demonstration being planned by our area fire and ambulance services.
Since all of these events are taking place near the Lions Food Den food stand, it would be a great time for some lunch served by the Elroy Lions Club. They will be serving burgers,
pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, the always tempting fries, cheese fries, chili cheese fries, and of course - apple dumplings for dessert. A trip to the park for some of the great food and an apple dumpling is a must. Besides hosting the breakfast and the numerous activities going on at the park, the Lions will also be serving food throughout the day. They will be assisted by the Juneau County Amateur Radio Operators Club in the morning and early afternoon. The Boy Scouts will be there holding a silent auction. You will have some great items for people to bid on. Also, the fair board will be close by selling beverages to anyone needing a cool refreshment.
As you can see, the Elroy City Park (Schultz Park) will be busy from early morning until late afternoon. Whether you like being an active participant, or would rather watch from the sidelines, there will be something for kids of all ages (and adults as well) at this year's Elroy Apple Dumpling Day Fest. We hope to see a great turnout of Elroy area citizens as well as people from miles and miles around this area. Camping is also available at the park. If you would like to bring your tents or campers we would love to have you with us. You can reserve a campsite by calling the Elroy Commons at 462-2410. Also, if you would like any other information on any of the other numerous events taking place you can contact Lion Jeff Ladwig @ 608 963-7988 for details, phone numbers.
