Yesterday evening the news spread rather quickly in Juneau County that a young 3 year old boy had accidentally shot himself in the abdomen with a handgun. The first word of the tragic accident came via Grand Marsh Scanner on their Facebook page. They wrote: "40xx H near Hustler, Plymouth Township, juvenile grazed himself with a handgun. +Officer on location, alert and conscious, officer advises it is a wound to the stomach and it requires a 10-33 response at this time. +It is an entry wound to the stomach. Checking for an available helicopter. Possibility of 2 wounds. +3yo boy. +Through and through gunshot wound, bleeding is being controlled at this time."

Within a couple of hours we learned that the child was the son of Elroy's Chief of Police, Tony Green, and that Green had been possibly suspended while an investigation was conducted.

This afternoon Juneau County Sheriff Brent Oleson issued the following press release:

" On December 4, 2017, the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation responded to a critical incident in Elroy, Wis. involving a 3-year-old child who shot himself with his father’s firearm. The child’s father is Elroy Chief of Police Tony Green. The child is recovering well and is expected to be released from the hospital today.

This incident is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation at the request of Juneau County Sheriff Brent Oleson."

This morning we contacted Elroy City Administrator, Carol Brown, and inquired who at this time was actively in charge of the Elroy Police and the response we received was , "No comment."
