Three vehicle accident in Vernon County - Press Release

Vernon County Sheriff John B. Spears reports that on May 7, 2018 at 4:07 p.m. the sheriff’s office received a 911 call reporting a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and County Highway B east of Coon Valley in the Town of Coon.

Sherry L. Coleman, age 53, of rural Westby, WI was stopped in the westbound lane on U.S. Highway 14 signaling to turn left onto County Road B. A westbound motorcycle operated by Linnea B. Rice, age 45, on Onalaska, WI stopped in traffic behind Coleman’s vehicle. Another westbound vehicle operated by Allison G. Hawthorne, age 21, of rural Westby, WI became distracted by an oversized load caravan and took her eyes off the road. Hawthorne’s vehicle ran over Rice and her motorcycle. Rice and the motorcycle became pinned under Hawthorne’s vehicle. As Hawthorne’s vehicle continued forward it rear-ended Coleman’s vehicle. Linnea Rice was able to free herself from under the wreckage with assistance from Hawthorne, Coleman and other motorists.

Linnea Rice was transported to Mayo Health by Tri-State Ambulance. Hawthorne and Coleman did not report any injuries.

Both Coleman and Hawthorne were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Rice was not wearing a helmet.

Coon Valley First Responders, Coon Valley Fire Department and Tri-State Ambulance assisted the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office at the scene. U.S. Highway 14 was partially blocked and reduced to one lane for approximately two hours.

The crash remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
